What does "direct drive" mean? It means that the pump is bolted to the engine shaft, so it spins
at the same speed as the engine motor which is about 3450 RPMs. This means that your pump's
speed is also about 3450 RPMs. This design is harsher on pump life. These units are less
expensive and for many, many applications are an excellent choice.
We would recommend "belt drive" machines for those individuals who plan to draw water from a
tank. Belt drive pumps do not work as hard due to the pulley and belt system that slows the RPMs
down to 1400-1700 RPMs. These units are more expensive than a direct drive but typically last
longer.
